See the biggest stories of 2018 in sport, politics and daily life through the lenses of Australia's best press photographers in a compelling exhibition opening at the State Library of South Australia on 1 February 2019. The 2018 Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition, presented in partnership with The Walkley Foundation, lets us reflect on the year in the news through the individual worldviews and skilled lenses of Australia’s best photographers.
Visitors to the exhibition will experience the heartbreak and triumph, jubilation and devastation as Australia's most outstanding photojournalists take them from their own backyards to the furthest corners of the globe.
Geoff Strempel, Director State Library of South Australia comments:
“This exhibition is about capturing and sharing moments in time, something that we at the State Library are very committed to. The State Library has an extensive photographic collection dating back to 1850 that not only records the state’s history but also provides a powerful way of connecting that history with the community.”
“We know the impact a single image can have on an individual as they uncover their personal connection to a moment captured in a photograph. That is why we are so pleased to host this prestigious exhibition at the library.”
The Walkley Awards are the highest honour in Australian journalism, celebrating excellence across all media. The awards have more than 30 categories, including documentary film and non- fiction books. The 2018 finalists for the Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism were selected from just over 2000 images and were judged for newsworthiness, impact, creativity and technical skill.
Photojournalism speaks volumes and as Dorothea Lange, American documentary photographer and photojournalist once said:
"Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still".
The 2018 Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition is on display at the State Library of South Australia until 7 April 2019. It’s an exhibition not to be missed.
