We are pleased to announce the appointment of Megan Berghuis as the new Director of the State Library of South Australia.
After an extensive national search, Megan was selected for her wealth of experience and breadth of skills across the libraries network and local government sector.
“I’m immensely proud to join the State Library of South Australia as Director and to work with staff and key stakeholders to continually find new and innovative ways to share the stories of the past with current and future generations to enjoy, experience and learn from."
Megan will replace current Director, Geoff Strempel who retires this month after seven years in the role and a distinguished career spanning more than 40 years in library services.
Megan joins the State Library following successful roles at the City of Unley, most recently as General Manager Community and Organisational Development, overseeing a diverse portfolio including arts, culture and libraries. She has held various leadership positions at the Council over a 12-year period. She also currently sits on the Libraries Board of South Australia and is Chair of the Public Libraries Committee.

“The State Library of South Australia is a much-loved cultural institution and the state’s largest research library. It has a vibrant future ahead with a number of significant projects, collections and exhibitions in the works which help tell the rich and diverse stories of South Australia.
“I am extremely passionate about the arts and look forward to applying my depth of knowledge to continue to transform the State Library and the public libraries into a stronger cohesive network.”
Megan will start her new role as Director on 4 November 2024, leading the State Library of South Australia through its next phase of growth.
