The intent of the Intellectual Freedom Policy is for both the State Library of South Australia and public libraries to develop, maintain and provide access to collections of resources to meet the information needs and interests of their communities, and Libraries must:

  • Function as an unbiased source of information and ideas, including online content.

  • Accept responsibility for providing free access to materials and information presenting, as far as possible, all points of view on contemporary and historical issues, including controversial issues.

  • These materials should not be excluded from a public library on moral, political, racial, religious, sexist, language, or other grounds.

  • Libraries are mandated by law to exclude materials that are subject to federal and state restriction or prohibition.
